Unboxing the Realme 6 Pro
There are no surprises when it comes to Realme 6 Pro’s packaging and content. The phone still comes in the brand’s trademark yellow box, with a big number 6 inked on the front and a small Pro underneath.
Inside, you can find the Realme smartphone along with a transparent silicone case, USB Type-C cable, a 30W flash charger, SIM ejector pin as well as a Quick Start Guide.
A Striking Design, Literally
The Realme 6 Pro cannot be missed. It has a distinctive look sporting a striking UV-curing offset printing effect of a lightning bolt pattern that is beautiful in all 3 color options: Lightning Blue, Lightning Orange, Lightning Red.
And though gradient designs on smartphone backplates are quite common now, Realme still found a new way to implement the color treatment on the Realme 6 Pro to give it a fresh design that is simply stunning to look at.
The back of the phone is fully covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, making it scratch-resistant and provides some protection from accidental falls. Otherwise, the smartphone frame and buttons are made of polycarbonate plastic to keep the weight low. Though we are not a big fan of the plastic volume buttons that gives it a cheap feeling.
But overall, the phone gives some good ergonomics and feels comfortable to hold though it can be a tad bulky for one-hand operation, given its 6.6-inch large display screen and over 9 mm thickness.
A new design for this Realme model is the power button on the right edge that now doubles as a fingerprint scanner. It is super responsive and just a light touch is enough to wake up and unlock the phone which makes it pretty convenient.
Meanwhile, on the left side, Realme 6 Pro holds a triple card slot that can accommodate two 4G Nano-SIMs along with a dedicated micro SD card, which can be convenient for users who are looking for more expandable storage up to 256GB.
The rest of the layout is standard, with a USB-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom of the phone. Despite not having an official IP rating, Realme says that the Realme 6 Pro is splash-resistant and can survive the occasional splash. However, note that it is not waterproof and should never be submerged underwater.
High 90Hz Refresh Rate Screen Display
One of the Realme 6 Pro’s main highlights is unmistakably its 90Hz refresh rate display. This comes as a splendid surprise on such a cheap smartphone range. Up until now, high refresh rate displays have always been exclusive to high-end smartphones.
All this provides a fluid viewing experience that is faster, smoother, and more responsive no matter if you are switching between apps or scrolling through social media.
You have also got the option to set your default refresh rate at 60Hz and 90Hz in the settings menu, or you can go for the battery optimized mode – to let the smartphone automatically switch between them based on what you are doing.
And while Realme 6 Pro isn’t necessarily OLED-based, it features an IPS LCD display that shows minimal difference in quality.
You are still looking at a 6.6-inch full HD+ resolution with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels that is pretty sharp, despite the pixel density dropping a shade below 400 PPI. Its screen brightness can also reach a peak figure of 480 nits, which is more than sufficient for outdoor use.
The screen takes up ~84.7% screen-to-body ratio, and all this is covered with sturdy Corning Gorilla Glass 5 that provides protection from damages and falls.
With everything combined, the viewing experience is great for most users and you can enjoy streaming videos on Netflix or playing video games on the Realme 6 Pro seamlessly.
Great Processor and Memory
Under the hood, the Realme 6 Pro is powered by an Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G (8 nm) CPU that is one of the most energy-efficient and capable mid-level chipsets on the market.
Paired with the Adreno 618 GPU and 8GB RAM, this is good news for gaming enthusiasts as you will be getting a mid-range gaming powerhouse that can handle most Android games without any problems.
We tried playing PUBG on the smartphone with the highest graphics settings enabled and the gameplay was smooth without any hiccups. The device also did not heat up in the solo round which lasted about 35 minutes.
Impressive Camera and 2x Optical Zoom
Another highlight for the device is its main camera setup. You can find a total of six cameras on the Realme 6 Pro with two front cameras and four cameras vertically stacked at the back, which gives something new outside of the usual rectangular setup.
For the front camera, the Realme 6 Pro dual selfie shooters consist of a 16MP wide-angle with an f/2.1 aperture lens and an 8MP ultra-wide-angle placed in a wide cut out on the top left. You can easily switch between the two lenses and the ultra wide-angle will give you a much greater field of view which is perfect for taking group selfies!
You can easily accommodate more people into the frame and the photography qualities are simply amazing as selfies captured are sharp with natural skin tone.
Plus, the dual selfie shooters can also allow you to record videos at 1080p full HD resolutions, as well as slo-mo videos at 120 frames per second which is suitable for content creators and influencers who are active on TikTok or Instagram.
Moving to its rear cameras, the Realme 6 Pro’s quad-camera module is made up of a 64MP Samsung GW1 sensor with an f/1.8 aperture lens, an 8MP wide-angle camera, a 12MP telephoto sensor with an f/2.5 aperture, and a 2MP macro camera.
This high resolution, wide aperture, and large sensor size setup makes the Realme model a very dependable photo camera with the capabilities to shoot amazing shots even in dim lighting conditions.
Even without night mode enabled, images turned out to be pretty good and sharp with a good amount of details retained. Of course, the Super Nightscape 3.0 mode works just as well and manages to make the images brighter without going over the top.
By default, Realme 6 Pro cameras operate with a standard mode that pixel-bins images down to 16MP for space efficiency. The quality of the images in this mode is pretty good, with vibrant colors and ample details. Noise levels are kept well in check. HDR works well here and it’s best to leave the smartphone in Auto mode.
Still, you can always switch to the highest 64MP mode taken by its main camera, as well as Portrait and Night mode that is powered by Realme’s own AI beautification software and HDR for photos.
With the telephoto camera, you can also get 2x optical zoom and 5x hybrid/digital zoom toggles. Images shot using 5x zoom in bright conditions look pretty decent and manage to come out with a good amount of details.
Though it also boasts about a 20x hybrid zoom, it doesn’t quite give you a clear image and we recommend leaving that untouched.
While the Realme 6 Pro lacks a dedicated Depth Sensor, it does come with a few camera features and AI capabilities such as the Bokeh effect and AI scene recognition that can up your photography game.
These camera features can help automatically increase the phone’s exposure and saturation settings depending on what you are shooting at or blur the background and emphasize the subject and create a cinematic effect of large aperture.
UIS & UIS Max Video Stabilization
Now for video recording, the main camera will give you the capabilities to shoot up to 4K with 30 frames per second and FullHD 1080p at 30 and 60 frames per second.
This is also combined with many innovative functions such as the UIS Max video stabilization, which reduces shaking when you are moving around recording to give you really steady videos. Meanwhile, this also works on the ultra wide-angle camera that can shoot FullHD at up to 60 frames per second.
Moreover, the Realme 6 Pro also comes with a readily built-in video editor – the SOLOOP app video creation tool – that allows you to instantly generate lively, interesting, and professional short videos.
Here’s a quick 4K video captured using the Realme 6 Pro.
Battery and Charging Capacity
When it comes to the battery department for the Realme 6 Pro, the smartphone is powered by a decent 4,300 mAh cell that supports 30W fast charging thanks to the VOOC fast charging tech.
This can last you a solid day and a half of messaging, browsing through social media, watching videos mixed with some casual game playing.
But otherwise, the new charging technology greatly reduces time and you can easily connect your smartphone to the bundled USB charger and get your phone from zero to 100% in under an hour. Or if you are really in a rush, just plug it in for 15 minutes to get 40%.
And yes, that is as good as things get in this segment. To help put you into perspective, the Samsung Note 20 that has the same 4,3000 mAh cell takes 60 minutes just to reach 92% with its 25W fast-charging.
Naturally, there is no wireless charging support here and we wouldn’t expect that at this price point anyway.
Android 10 With New Realme UI
Out of the box, the phone runs the Realme UI layered right on top of Android 10. It is one of the nicer user interfaces that is fairly clean with a simplistic home screen and notifications/ toggle area. The task switcher is easy to use and the smartphone comes with an App Drawer too which helps declutter.
Additionally, the software system also supports customization with their icon packs, and if you are not happy with the default settings, you can always opt for other available styles or even fully customize them to your liking.
There are a lot of powerful tools within the settings menu if you want total control over your Android OS. Or you can keep it simple and leave everything as optimized by Realme’s optimized Android experience.
One issue here though is that the phone comes bundled with a lot of preinstalled bloatware. However, this is not something you can’t solve. Just make sure you clean up your phone in the beginning and block unwanted notifications.
Quick 2021 Update: Earlier in April, Realme released the Android 11-based Realme UI 2.0 upgrade for the 6 Pro that added unlimited customizations and enhanced privacy and security measures. Other major improvements also include a new Optimized Night Charging mode, filters for Drawer Mode, Dark Mode Galore, and more.
Competitive Alternatives to Realme 6 Pro Malaysia
When it comes to the Realme 6 Pro price in Malaysia and alternatives for the budget, the device competes with many other mid-range smartphones as well as options from its own brand.
For RM1299, you can even get the latest Realme 8 Pro that is slightly cheaper compared to the Realme 6 Pro price in Malaysia.
Still powered by the same gaming processor core, this Realme option has a more impressive 108MP camera setup, a larger 4,500 battery with 50W super dart charge, and an AMOLED screen. However, its durability comes to question as it lacks Corning Gorilla Glass protection and water-resistant qualities.
On the other hand, many also noted that the Realme 6 vanilla model provides a better cost-to-value ratio.
Like the Realme 6 Pro, this standard model also features the same large 90Hz display and FHD+ LCD screen, as well as similar rear cameras at a significantly lower price of RM999 in retail. And this can be a good option if you are looking for a device for regular use and casual gaming, this works just as well if not better
If you can afford a bit extra at RM1899, you could also pick up the Realme X3 Super Zoom if you are big for imaging and looking for a slimmer aluminum design, larger battery, and faster performance that pushes at 120Hz.
Should You Buy the Realme 6 Pro?
Ultimately, the Realme 6 Pro is a Pro model for a relatively low price. Crafted for demanding consumers who are looking for a stylish and elegant device that brings great value.
No matter if you get the device in beautiful lightning blue or powerful lightning red, the Realme 6 Pro comes with competent hardware, a sharp display, and an extremely versatile set of cameras that take great photos in various lighting conditions.
Most importantly, it delivers this all-around great mobile experience at a very competitive price tag. This is everything you can ask for in a mid-range phone.
However there are still a few sacrifices and we don’t recommend buying this phone if you are searching for a more compact waterproof device, or if you want the best specs for your device.
But otherwise, the Realme 6 Pro just might be the right smartphone for you.
